CSBAG CONTRIBUTION TO MANAGING EFFECTS OF COVID-19 IN UGANDA

With COVID-19, close to $29Bn USD has been wiped out from African economies, GDP forecasts have been revised downwards. In Uganda, the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development estimates that economic growth will fall from 6% to 5.2-5.7% in the medium scenario and 4.6-5.1% in the severe scenario. COVID-19 Pandemic offers Uganda a rare chance to undertake policy changes that address the existing and future public health system challenges as well boost the economy in long-term. We therefore need to take very decisive steps to protect our citizens and the economy.

CSBAG is advocating for a people centred and pro-poor approach in the country response to COVID-19 efforts and continuing our advocacy for prudent public finance management. Specifically:

  • We are engaging with decision makers, providing credible economic policy alternatives to managing the effects of the pandemic on the people of Uganda and our economy to ensure that the very poor and vulnerable are protected today and beyond –CSBAG statement on Economic policy measures to address the impact of COVID-19 in Uganda
  • At the same time, we are continuing our advocacy for prudent public finance management to ensure the public resources are not being misused and here is value for money at such a time when Government to provide the best possible measures to addressing COVID-19
  • We are continuing to convene through bilateral meetings, phone and Skype calls, and other digital platforms

We continue to ask everyone to observe Ministry of Health guidelines for safety measures during this period. #StayHomeStaySafe #COVID19UG
